Why go through an Institutional Review Board (IRB)?
The AEMS research department is following ethical guidelines in conducting high quality studies. The main purpose is to protect its target participants - youth, teachers, parents, and university students - in the "Mapping the Terrain" study on empathy, forgiveness, moral reasoning, and community mindedness. This process is important particularly when youth are involved in the study; some may be living in fragile conditions or forced to participate and thus need protection and respect.
Based on the IRB requirements of academic publications, all research that is conducted and published in academic journals has to go through IRB approvals. The Institutional Review Board has determined that "Mapping the Terrain" study is following ethical guidelines in its protocols of data collection among all target groups in the respective countries.
