Prof. Brown opened up his presentation by a brief overview of the book, explaining the motivation behind writing this work. He was always impressed by the sheer volume of intellectual legacy in Islamic thought, and he also wanted to understand the choices people make when interpreting Islam in contemporary times. Prof. Brown explained that the title of the book, “Misquoting Muhammad,” is a misnomer since his intentions were not in line with Prof. Bart Ehrman’s famous book, “Misquoting Jesus.” Instead, Prof. Brown elaborated, the real title of the book is its subtitle.
Many members of the audience submitted questions and Prof. Brown engaged several of them. Among these were: the relationship between Islamic law and civil law, contextualizing the Qur’an and the Sunnah, modern interpretations of ‘problematic’ ahadith (Prophetic traditions), making Islam relevant in contemporary age, and the problem of applying modern epistemology in interpreting Islamic legacy.
