IIIT announced on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009, the formation of the Council of Scholars in the US. The Council of Scholars is to provide advice to IIIT on academic matters. It is comprised of eight senior scholars from American and Canadian Universities who are professors of religion, Islamic studies or social sciences with published works and current research interests that intersect with IIIT areas of interest and with a record of research and publications in the sociological study of Islam and Muslim world affairs.

It was a joyful evening of breaking fast together and enjoying a fine dinner on September 18 when IIIT directors and staff invited some Muslim and non-Muslim friends of IIIT for its third annual Ramadhan event. The invitees had working relationship with IIIT on various projects during the past year. Good company and good conversation highlighted the evening.

It was a day of excitement for the summer interns, who started their program yesterday June 30, 2008 at the International Institute of Islamic Thought. Ten interns from different fields of study met with their instructors and IIIT directors for an orientation about IIIT, the program, and a briefing about the course.

The International Institute of Islamic Thought is sad to announce the passing of prominent Arab-American scholar, Dr. George Atiyeh, who headed the Middle East Section of the Library of Congress for 30 years. He passed away on Monday, April 21, 2008, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. IIIT expresses its deep condolences to Dr. Atiyeh’s family and friends.

As part of the State Department's International Visitor Program entitled "Religion and Society: A Dialogue," two delegations of religious scholars and university professors visited IIIT on Thursday April 17 and Friday, April 18, 2008. The program for the delegation from Thailand and the Phillippines included twelve religious scholars, six from each country. Most of the members of the delegation were professors of Islamic studies in their respective universities.

In its mission to promote quality education, IIIT has purchased land in the Northern Province of Lebanon to establish a much needed university. Last month, Dr. Jamal Barzinji, Vice-President of IIIT, met with his Excellency Mr. Fouad al Sinyora, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, who strongly supports this project.
Dr. Zaid Abidin Bagir, Director of the Graduate Program at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural studies at Gajah Made University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, delivered a lecture at IIIT headquarters on Thursday April 3, 2008. The lecture was on the transformation of Islamic State Universities in Indonesia.
Two popular comedians, two different faiths were the high point of the third anniversary celebration of the Center for Interfaith Study and Dialog (CISD) held on March 26. Two internationally known comedians - one Jew and one Muslim - Rabbi Bob Alper and Azhar Usman, shared one stage at Nazareth College Shults Center Otto Forum. The performance followed a dessert reception, and drew an excited crowd.
A group of eleven scholars from nine countries visited IIIT on Thursday, March 26, 2008. The group, who are mainly specialized in religious studies and philosophy, came to the United States to participate in a month long seminar on “Faith and Reason Today” organized by the Council for Research on Values and Philosophy, the Catholic University, Washington D.C.
