It is with great sadness that IIIT mourns the passing away of Imam Hanooti. May Allah (SWT) shower him with mercy and forgiveness, reward him amply for his good deeds and enter him Paradise. Our deep condolences go to his all his family and loved ones.
Sheikh Mohammad al-Hanooti was born in Haifa, Palestine in 1937. He emigrated to Baghdad, Iraq in 1948. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in English Language/Literature from the University of Baghdad in 1964 and his Master’s Degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Punjab, Pakistan in 1976.
Sheikh Mohammad al-Hanooti was appointed to the Fiqh Council of North America since 1978. He was the Mufti of Washington Metropolitan Area since 2002, where he issued fatwas nationwide, delivered weekly khutbahs, taught weekly classes on Hadith, Tafseer and advanced Islamic Studies. He also performed marriages and family counseling, and delivered conference lectures nationwide. He represented the Muslim Community in many local public forums, including giving expert scholarly testimony in court cases.
He was the Imam of numerous Islamic centers in New Jersey and Virginia.
