For the first time since their recent appointment, the IIIT Council of Scholars met in a face-to-face meeting at IIIT on Saturday, February 20. All Council members attended except one who joined via audio conference. Composed of accomplished scholars, the Council serves as an advisory group to review IIIT's programs and plans and offer advise on priorities and directions for IIIT to consider.
Nearly thirty Imams and leaders from the area Muslim community attended an Open House on Tuesday, February 16 at IIIT hosted by The Fairfax Institute (TFI) at IIIT to learn about the new Graduate Certificate in Imam Education being offered at TFI jointly with Hartford Seminary located in Hartford, CT. Following a dinner, Dr. Iqbal Unus and Dr. Hisham Altalib shared information about IIIT and the certificate program being offered through TFI.
On Friday, January 29th, 2010; IIIT organized the first lecture of its monthly lecture series for 2010. The guest speaker was Dr. Tony Sullivan, Senior Fellow for Mediterranean and Near East Programs at The Fund for American Studies, Washington, DC. Dr. Sullivan called for the revival of the Halaqa or the Circle of Tradition and Progress, a group of leading American and Muslim scholars/activists established in the mid 1990s for the purpose of erecting a new basis for intercultural dialogue.
