IIIT organized the first of a series of on-day seminars on American Muslim identity on Saturday, May 7th, 2011. The seminar, entitled “American Muslim Identity: Contexts, Dynamics, challenges & Prospects”, brought together twenty five scholars, intellectuals, experts and community leaders from diverse academic backgrounds, professions and community organizations. On Friday, June 10, 2011 Professor James Jones, Professor of Religion and African studies at Manhattanville College, New York, delivered a lecture at IIIT on the challenges of Islam to and in the United States. The major thesis of his presentation was that the current contentious clash between Islam and the West is being played out both in American foreign policy and domestic affairs. IIIT hosted Dr. Louay Safi, Common Word Fellow at Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim Christian Understanding, the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, on Friday, May 27, 2011. On Wednesday, May 11 th, 2011, IIIT hosted Mr. Mehdi Alizadeh, President of the Center for Ethics and Moral Education at Mustafa Open University, Qom, Iran; who spoke on the issue of the Islamization of Science. IIIT hosted Dr. Abdulaziz Sachedina, Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Virginia on Friday, April 29, 2011. Professor Sachedina spoke to a select group of intellectuals and community leaders about the challenges of human rights and democratic pluralism in Islam.
In his lecture, Professor Sachedina challenged the exclusive claims to universality by some advocates of the International Declaration of Human Rights and their dismissal of the relevance of religion – Islam included – to the universal foundation of human rights.
