IIIT Council of Scholars Concludes First Meeting in South Africa

The Council of Scholars of International Institute of Islamic Thought concluded its first meeting in Cape Town, South Africa on January 22, 2008. About twenty scholars, board members and directors of IIIT offices and affiliate organizations participated in the three day meeting which was chaired by Dr. AbdulHamid AbuSulayman, President of IIIT. The discussions included the advisory role of the Council of Scholars in planning IIIT research agenda and reviewing its work beside the evaluation of the experience of IIIT in the past 25 years, the lessons learned and directions for the future.
 
The rich deliberations culminated in recommendations related to reviewing the Research plan for IIIT, setting new priorities in view of the changing circumstances and challenges and streamlining operations for more effective coordination between the different offices and affiliate organizations. The recommendations were submitted to IIIT Board of Trustees.
 
Local cosponsors for the meeting included the Awqaf Foundation of South Africa, the Muslim Students Association of Cape Town and OASIS Investment Group. Brother Ibrahim Jadwat, prominent community leader and businessman from Durban, coordinated the program that included visits to historical sites and mosques in Cape Town, the International Peace University and a meeting with the Western Cape provincial Governor. OASIS Investment Group invited all participants to an entertaining banquet dinner at Westin Grand hotel. Awqaf Foundation of South Africa engaged IIIT representatives in substantive discussions over possibilities for cooperation and concluded an MOU with IIIT during the event.
