Speakers and panelists from 40 countries around the world addressed various aspects of Islamophobia at a conference organized by the Union of NGOs of the Islamic World in Istanbul, Turkey on December 8 and 9. The conference was opened by Prof. Ekramuddin Ihsanuglo, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
The opening session of the conference was also addressed by former deputy prime minister of Malaysia and IIIT board member Dr. Anwar Ibrahim, former president of Kashmir Sardar Muhammad Abdul Qayyum Khan, and noted author Karen Armstrong.
Renowned scholar Tariq Ramadhan and a number of other scholars and activists presented papers in different panel sessions on various topics.
Also among those who presented papers were IIIT UK Office director Dr. Anas al-Sheikh Ali, director of The Fairfax Institute (IIIT) Dr. Iqbal Unus, and former IIIT publications director and currently director of ISNA Leadership Development Center Dr. Louay Safi.
Almost a thousand persons, including 200 invited guests, attended the conference at Grand Cevahir Hotel in the heart of Istanbul. The full program, biodata and photos of speakers and panelists, and their abstracts, can be accessed at the Islamophobia conference website.
