 IIIT hosted Dr. Timur Yuskaev, Assistant Professor of Contemporary Islam and Director of Islamic Chaplaincy Program at the Hartford Seminary, Hartford, CT on Friday, April 22nd. Dr. Yuskaev delivered a lecture on the emerging American Muslim interpretations of the Qur’an, entitled “A Spoken Qur’an: American Voices”.Through analysis of oral exegeses by two prominent American Muslim preachers, Imam W.D. Muhammed and Hamza Yusuf, Yuskaev argues that the Qur’an emerges as an American Muslim sacred text when it becomes a locally resonant spoken word. This spoken Qur’an is key in the development of a new Muslim culture of global importance.
Dr. Timur Yuskaev received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A from the University of Colarado, Boulder, Colorado, and a B.A. from Bard College. His areas of specialization include Qur’anic hermeneutics, translation studies, Muslim modernities and Islam in North America.
