 Veteran social studies teacher trainer Susan Douglass conducted a workshop on December 11, 2008 hosted by The Fairfax Institute (TFI), IIIT’s instructional division, and sponsored by Georgetown University’s Al-Waleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. The workshop was the first ever conducted for students, and included about 40 Advanced Placement students of Maryland’s Crossland High School in Temple Hills, MD. “The workshop exceeded our expectation,” said Juana Martin, AP World History teacher in Prince George’s County school district. “We will certainly be back,” added Brian Ford, Crossland H.S. Government and World History teacher.
The students spent a full school day at the workshop, TFI Director Dr. Iqbal Unus welcomed the students at the opening and spoke to them in an informal question and answer session after they had observed the Zuhr prayers in IIIT’s prayer area. Students left the workshop with a greater understanding of the complex topics in the College Board’s Advanced Placement world history class on a range of topics related to Islam and Muslims in world history. They had prepared readings on contributions in science, arts and technology that reached Europe through Muslim al-Andalus, about the spread of Islam as a historical process over many centuries, and about contemporary hot-button issues. Each student received gifts of books from IIIT, and the teachers received Teacher Resource CDs.
