Foundation Stone of Al-Sharq University

IIIT as strategic partner and academic advisor, participated in laying down the foundation stone for Al-Sharq University (University of the Orient). In a major ceremony on the site of the University in Northern Lebanon, Prime Minister Fuad Seniora laid down the foundation stone following a major speech to an audience which exceeded one thousand people.

IIIT - MA in Contemporary Islamic Thought

Dr. Tawfic AwjiIIIT -in partnership with Beirut Islamic University (BIU) of Lebanon- is launching a program to teach contemporary Islamic Thought for the degree of Master of Arts. Instruction is to commence in Fall 2009 both in-class and Distance Learning.

Dr. Tawfic Awji, director of the program, says most students should be able to finish the degree in 2-3 years, including a required thesis. The program is geared to professionals as well as graduates of Islamic studies. The flexibility of Distance Learning allows the program to be offered internationally where test centers are designated in the country of residence of the student or in the region.

Special Envoy for Muslim Communities from Spain Visits IIIT

Ambassador José María FerréOn Wednesday, July 8, 2009, IIIT welcomed Ambassador José María Ferré, Special Envoy for Muslim Communities and Organizations, the Government of Spain. Ambassdor Ferré is visiting the United States for meetings with leaders of the American  Muslim community and others who are concerned with the status and conditions of Muslims as a minority in the United States. Mr. Ferre – an experienced diplomat who served in Beirut and Jerusalem among other Middle Eastern capitals – was the first to be appointed to a position designed to deal with Muslim communities and their organizations. He has served in the position since 2006.

Mr. Ferré focused in his lecture on the demographics of the Muslim community in Spain, their history and their relationship with their “homelands” and the challenges this presents to their integration into the Spanish society. He presented the policies of the Spanish government in relation to Muslims and its role – and constraints - in supporting the Muslim community, particularly in the field of education of children and the training of Imams.
